|OLNEY - The boys Lawrence County cross country team of Lawrenceville and Red Hill high schools took first place at Tuesday's meet against Olney and Mt. Carmel. |
The team had lost two of three meet to Olney this season, but Tuesday came out on top beating them by five points with 30, leaving Olney with 35 and Mount Carmel 66.

|LAWRENCEVILLE - Parkview Junior High School's softball team closed out the regular season with an 8-3 win over visiting Cumberland on Thursday.|
Melody Lockhart fanned seven batters while pitching a complete game for the Braves (6-7) of coach Jerica Conner.
Kylie Routien had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for PJHS, while Elizabeth Steffey and Tina Johnson contributed two hits apiece. Katelyn Higginbotham had two hits and an RBI for Parkview, while Lockhart added a hit and an RBI.

Zeth Underhill, Brenyn Winningham and Ryan Schultz all scored touchdowns for Lawrenceville while Brayden Sherman ran in a two-point conversion.
Hunter Scott intercepted a pass and Fox led the team in tackles.

Leyton Ivers and Drevin Sanders had three hits each for the Braves of coach Jeremy Sanders (3-4), while Ryan Schultz, Ethan Kelly and Chalean Fox all added two hits. Jimmy Bible, Levi Holland, Brogan Blagrave, Dominik Elliott and Jared Gray also connected in the win.

|Four from Big 10
|ROSEMONT - Four Big Ten students were named to the Manning Award watch list on Monday, including Illinois' Wes Lunt, Iowa's C.J. Beathard, Nebraska's Tommy Armstrong and Ohio State's J.T. Barrett.|
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
The winner will be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.

|CHAMPAIGN - Led by an encouraging report in football participation nationwide, the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 27th consecutive year in 2015-16 according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).|
Based on figures from the 51 NFHS member state high school associations, which includes the District of Columbia, the number of participants in high school sports reached an all-time high of 7,868,900 - an increase of 61,853 from the previous year.

The Orange and Blue were on the practice fields next to Memorial Stadium for just over two hours on a warm, sunny day on the University of Illinois campus. |
Head coach Lovie Smith said the defense, especially, was happy to finally be in full pads.

| ST. LOUIS - The Southern Illinois football program was picked eighth in the preseason Missouri Valley Football Conference poll, the league announced Tuesday. Chase Allen was a preseason first-team All-MVFC pick, and Billy Reed and Daquan Isom were honorable mention selections.|
The poll consists of votes from the coaches, local media and sports information directors in the 10-team conference. North Dakota State was picked to win the league, gathering 37 of a possible 39 first-place votes. Northern Iowa was picked second and garnered the other two first-place votes, followed by South Dakota State, Illinois State, Youngstown State, Western Illinois and South Dakota. Indiana State and Missouri State were picked ninth and 10th, respectively.

|Trailblazer 5K set
for Aug. 27 at VU|
|VINCENNES - The sixth annual Trailblazer 5K will take place Aug. 27 on the campus of Vincennes University.|
Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the run-walk starts at 8. The event will begin at the VU outdoor track and field facility, at the corner of Chestnut Street and Red Skelton Boulevard.
Sponsored by Generations, the event has a $30 entry fee until Aug. 13. Awards will be presented to the top male and female overall finishers, and to the top three finishers in each age group.
A free half-mile fun run will follow.

named to OVC
|NASHVILLE - The Ohio Valley Conference football season officially begins on the field in just under seven weeks. On Monday in Nashville, the league released its preseason All-Conference team and predicted order of finish.|
Eastern Illinois was selected to finish third in this year's OVC football race in voting that had four points separate three teams picked second through fourth behind preseason favorite Jacksonville State.
Three Panthers - Devin Church, Bradley Dewberry, Seth McDonald - were selected to the preseason All-OVC team as EIU will open its 2016 season on Sept. 1 hosting Western Illinois at O'Brien Field.
