LHS boys, girls move on to cross country sectional
ROBINSON - Lawrenceville High School's cross country teams doubled their pleasure Saturday.

Both the LHS boys and girls teams placed sixth in Illinois High School Association Class A regional competition on the course near Robinson's Nuttall Middle School, and will run this weekend in sectional competition at Decatur. The top seven teams in each of the regional races qualified for the sectional.

The Lawrenceville teams are comprised of runners from both Lawrenceville and Red Hill high schools.

Lawrenceville's boys team scored 162 points to place sixth in a field of 12 full teams.

In the girls meet, LHS placed sixth out of nine teams with 138 points. LHS was originally listed seventh in the girls field, but moved up a spot. Greenville, which was sixth in the original standings, disqualified itself because the team knew it would not have enough available runners to participate in the sectional.

Boys meet

Junior Connor Holmes, a Red Hill student, paced the Indians as he placed 12th in a field of 84 in 17:10. Sophomore Dylan Volkman (20th in 17:42) and Harry Loeb (41st in 18:53) were the Indians' second and third runners. Freshman Noah Volkman (48th in 18:14) and Red Hill senior Tyler Tewell (55th in 19:27) also scored for LHS. Others who completed the three-mile race for the Tribe were sophomore Brandt Cochran (67th in 20:26) and senior Jag Rich (80th in 22:13).

Olney won the meet with 64 points, while Teutopolis (87), Robinson (95), Marshall (113), Cumberland (135) and Altamont (164) also earned sectional berths.

Altamont senior Andrew Sharp lived up to his name, winning the race in 15:40, eight seconds ahead of Robinson sophomore Noah Tenison. Vandalia's Ben Strobel (15:55), Marshall's Ben Scamihorn (16:06) and Greenville's Reid Rinelia (16:23) rounded out the top five.

Girls meet

Lawrenceville junior Hannah Holmes proved that she's among the area's elite, placing fourth in 19:52.

Only Effingham St. Anthony freshman Anna Sophia Keller 17:12), Olney Italian exchange student Simona Cargnino (18:58) and Newton junior Lexi Davidson (19:46) finished ahead of the first-year LHS runner. Greenville's Jordie File ran 20:01 to complete the top five.

Junior Heather Holmes nearly cracked the top 10 for LHS, but eventually finished 13th among 72 runners in 20:45. Red Hill freshman Rosie Aguirre (47th in 23:29) and Maddie Liberman (48th in 23:48) also scored for the Indians, as did sophomore Hannah Burkhardt, who ran 53rd in 24:08. Other finishers for the Indians were Macey Paddick (54th in 24:16) and Heather Hill (60th in 24:57).

The sectional meets will take place on the three-mile course at Hickory Point Golf Course. The Indians will travel to Decatur on Friday and will have an opportunity to practice on the course prior to Saturday's race.

The top five teams from the sectional will move on to the state finals, scheduled for Nov. 9 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
