No. 2 Casey swats away Salukis
BRIDGEPORT - Casey quickly showed why it's considered to be one of the best small-school football programs in the state of Illinois Friday evening.

The Warriors, ranked second in the most recent Associated Press Class A poll scored seven touchdowns in the first quarter-and-half and coasted to a 47-12 win over Red Hill High School's football team in Little Illini Conference Eastern Division play.

"The No. 2 team in the state did what it should have done," said Red Hill coach Billy Gray, whose Salukis are now 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the LIC Eastern. "We didn't have an answer for anything they wanted to do. When you have athletes like that, you don't have to worry about having the ball too long. They have speed, a smart quarterback and veteran players."

The Warriors, who are now 7-0 and wrapped up a 5-0 run through the Eastern Division with the win, scored just 18 seconds into the game on a 50-yard run by Ethan Williams.

Before the first quarter was over, Casey quarterback Nicco Stepina had thrown TD passes of 15 yards to Zach Murphy and 91 yards to Cory Carver.

Murphy scored twice more in the second period, on a 24-yard run and on a 15-yard toss from Stepina. A 45-yard punt return by Williams and a 24-yard run by Stepina gave the Warriors a 47-0 lead at halftime.

The clock ran continuously during the second half, thanks to the Illinois High School Association's 40-point mercy rule.

The Salukis were able to get on the scoreboard in each of the final two periods, thanks to short TD runs. Quarterback Dalton Murray hit paydirt from a yard away at the 2:12 mark of the third period. Isaiah Cavins scored on a 5-yard run with 5:38 remaining to conclude the night's scoring.

"I saw some positives," Gray said. "I looked out at the field in the first half and we had six sophomores playing. That's how good teams come, but you hate that for your seniors because they're suffering."

Casey finished with 301 yards in total offense, of which 177 came on the ground. The Salukis had 102 yards rushing and 9 through the air for a total of 111.

The Salukis will travel to Olney Friday, to play their penultimate game of the season. Casey figures to face a test when it hosts Robinson in a game that pairs the champions of the Eastern and Egyptian Divisions of the LIC against each other.
