High school volleyball
County teams fall in LIC play
Both Lawrence County high school volleyball teams suffered Little Illini Conference losses to visiting teams Thursday evening.

Flora needed just two games to take out Lawrenceville's Indians, while Red Hill's Salukis suffered a three-game loss to visiting Casey.

At Red Hill, the Salukis scored a 25-22 win in the middle game, sandwiched around 25-17, 25-11 losses.

"We played very well as a team tonight," said Red Hill coach Sarah Will, after her team fell to 1-14 overall and 1-6 in the LIC. "We served, passed and attacked aggressively and had many smart plays. This is one of the best matches we've played, but we beat ourselves in the third game."

Kenedee Whittaker had a solid floor game for the Salukis with 12 assists and eight digs. Katelyn Kocher had a team-high eight kills, with three aces, while Emilee Ellingsworth added five kills, with two blocks, four assists and three digs.

McKenzie Wolfe contributed six kills, a pair of aces and three digs, while Baelee Holloway came through with three kills and two digs and Andi Tennis added three digs.

Red Hill's junior varsity team fell to 1-9 as Casey notched a 25-5, 25-11 win,

The Salukis will play Saturday in the Hutsonville Invitational. Red Hill's matches are at 9 a.m. against the host Tigers, 11 a.m. against Noble and 1 p.m. against Hume-Shiloh in pool play. Red Hill will play an additional match after that.

At Lawrenceville, Flora's Wolfgals improved to 15-4 as they rolled past the Indians, 25-13, 25-13.

"We had too many missed serves tonight, along with too many balls dropping to the floor," said LHS coach Trinity Britton, whose team is now 0-16 overall and 0-8 in the league. "We have to find a way to keep our heads up high and pass through these rough times."

Brianna Mefford had a team-high two kills for LHS, while Kourtney Osmon led the team with four digs and Abby Higginbotham paved the way with three assists. Morgan Mefford added two digs for the Indians.

Flora won the junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-18.

Sidney Sullens and Natalee Reynolds both served two aces for LHS (1-10). Sullens led the team with six digs, while Haylee Croslow added four. Courtney Ridgley and Reynolds both had two assists.

Lawrenceville will also play in the Hutsonville Invitational Saturday. The Indians will face Dugger, Ind., at 8 a.m., Robinson at 10 a.m. and Marshall at noon in pool play competition. LHS will play an additional match against a team from the other pool later in the day.
