High school cross country
LHS competes at Fairfield
FAIRFIELD - Lawrenceville High School's girls cross country team was second in a field of three-full teams in Thursday's Fairfield Invitational, while the boys team finished fourth in a field of four full teams.

The Indians' Hannah Holmes handily won the girls race in 20:50, while her cousin, Connor Holmes, posted a top-five finish in the boys meet.

Girls meet

Chester scored 42 points to beat the Indians (58) and Mount Carmel (81). Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Webber Township, and Louisville-North Clay did not field full teams.

Hannah Holmes won by more than 100 meters, according to LHS co-coach Bill Bandy.

"She was in third place (after a mile) but patiently worked her way up and broke contact with her competition on a large hill in the last mile," Bandy said.

Heather Holmes (sixth in 22:35), Maddy Liberman (eighth in 23:12), Rosie Aguirre (17th in 25:38) and Heather Hill (26th in 29:26) were the Indians' other finishers.

Boys meet

Chester won the meet with 48 points, while Louisville-North Clay and host Fairfield both finished with 67. LHS was close, with 73 points.

Connor Holmes finished fifth in 18:26 to lead the Indians. Dylan Volkman (eighth in 19:02), Tyler Tewell (17th in 20:35), Noah Volkman (19th in 20:55) and Brandt Cochran (24th in 21:24) also scored for the Tribe. Harry Loeb (26th in 21:31) and Jag Rich (28th in 22:49) also competed.

Fairfield's Corbin Kacac won the race in 16:35.

The Indians will have little recovery time, as they are slated to run in Saturday's Cumberland Invitational.
