Indians run well at Olney Invitational
OLNEY - Lawrenceville High School's cross country teams weren't at full strength Saturday, but made solid showings in the Olney Invitational on the course at Olney Central College.

"Both team were plagued this weekend with illness and injuries," LHS co-coach Bill Bandy said. "We only had six girls and seven boys available to run, and for the first time to my knowledge, we had no one in the Open race. However, both teams bettered their performances compared to last year."

The Indians placed 12th in a field of 22 boys teams with 345 points. In the girls meet, the Indians were eighth among 16 complete teams with 239 points.

Boys meet

Charleston (75), Mount Vernon (85), Mattoon (121), Robinson (142) and the host Tigers (145) were the top five teams.

Connor Holmes, a junior at Red Hill school on the Lawrence County cooperative team, posted a 21st-place finish in 18:18. LHS sophomores Dylan Volkman (37th in 18:42), Harry Loeb (79th in 19:55) and Noah Volkman (100th in 20:41), as did Red Hill senior Tyler Tewell (108th in 21:11).

"Despite having five runners out, we still managed our best performance of the year thus far, finishing in the middle of the field," Bandy said.

Brandt Cochran (112th in 21:16) and Gage Hulen (144th in 25:05) completed the Indians' lineup.

Fairfield's Corbin Kakac won the race in 16:34, eight seconds ahead of runnerup Andrew Sharp of Altamont.

Girls meet

Mattoon (69), Breese Mater Dei (82), Carterville (109), Charleston (130) and Olney (132) were the top five teams.

Junior twins Hannah (18th in 21:22) and Heather (33rd in 22:33) Holmes topped the LHS effort. Maddy Liberman (44th in 23:20), Macey Paddick (79th in 26:05) and Chelsea Sholders (80th in 26:05) also scored for the Indians. Rosie Aguirre, who was 84th in 26:18, was the final LHS finisher.

"It was gratifying to beat most of the field, including some AA schools," Bandy said.

Mattoon runners Megan Schaffer (19:14) and Whitney Maninfior (19:26) finished 1-2 in the race.

The Indians will host Mount Carmel and Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. They'll host their own invitational meet at 10 a.m. Saturday on the course that starts and finishes in Lawrenceville City Park.
