Edwards County (0-2) at Red Hill (0-2)
Salukis say it's time to win
BRIDGEPORT - Nothing less than a win is acceptable for Red Hill High School's football team Friday, when it hosts Edwards County on homecoming night in a 7 p.m. matchup of 0-2 teams.

So says RHHS coach Billy Gray, whose team will likely be at full strength for the first time this season.

Gray says this week starts a four-game stretch - games with Oblong, Palestine and Cumberland will follow - in which his team has a great chance to win.

"Edwards County beat us last year and I told the kids I kind of felt like that loss was on my shoulders," said Gray, whose team has lost games to Flora and Robinson. "I'm not knocking their program, but that hadn't happened since I've been (on the coaching staff). We're not settling for anything less than a win this week."

It will be the first Little Illini Conference Eastern Division game for both squads.

Edwards County carries an eight-game losing streak into the contest, as the Lions have not won since defeating the Salukis 16-14 last season. The Salukis bring a six-game losing streak into the game, including four in a row at the conclusion of last season.

"I feel like this is our chance to get a win," said Edwards County coach Logan Crum. "The morale of the team is good. We've faced two of the tougher big-school teams (Lawrenceville and Olney) and played well with them."

The good news for the Salukis is that senior captain Jacob Wirth will play for the first time, as he's been nursing a banged-up knee. Gray says Wirth will play center when the Salukis have the ball, and will be used sparingly on defense.

Sophomore D.J. Winters will also be available. Gray says the 5-10, 200-pounder will fill in defensively, at tackle.

Junior Ryan Kolb may also take the field, pending clearance by his doctor. Gray hopes that Kolb (6-5, 220) will play receiver and defensive end.

Edwards County lost starting quarterback Jake Toutloff due to a knee injury in the opening loss to Lawrenceville. The senior is reportedly lost for the season.

In his stead, Chase Hortin has stepped in. In the loss to Lawrenceville, Hortin completed 10 of 22 passes for 101 yards and three interceptions.

Gray's watched a lot of tape on the Lions, and says he's prepared for them to bring eight to the line of scrimmage when the Salukis have the ball. He expects them to blitz frequently.

"We have to come up with some schemes to get away from that," he said.

Game notes: Friday's game will be broadcast on Fairfield radio station WOKZ, 105.9 FM ... Gray started practice at 5:30 on a couple of occasions this week, in an effort to keep the players from working out in the extreme heat ... The Salukis and Lions have played 26 times since Red Hill came into existence, with the Salukis holding a 21-5 edge in the series. The teams played every year from 1973 through 1986, and have met every season since the Salukis joined the LIC in 2001. The Salukis had won 15 in a row against the Lions, before Edwards County notched a 16-14 win in Albion last season ... Crum is 1-19 in his third year at the Edwards County helm, while Gray is 1-10 in his second season at Red Hill.
