Lawrenceville (2-0) at Robinson (2-0), 7 p.m., Fri
Indians' goal? Slow Robinson running game
LAWRENCEVILLE - While Lawrenceville High School quarterback Zach Shoulders draws much attention, the Robinson Maroons have a marked man of their own.

When the Indians (2-0) travel to Robinson (2-0) to open the Little Illini Conference Egyptian Division season Friday night, the focus will be on slowing the Maroons' Jason Richart (6-0, 215), a junior running back who has carried 36 times for 599 yards and six touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.

"He's had an unbelievable start to the season but we expected him to have a good year," Robinson coach Tim Nolen said. "He was our leading rusher as a sophomore, though he didn't start until the third game."

Wood says the Indians must limit Richart to have a chance.

"He's put up phenomenal numbers the first two weeks," Wood said. "We'll have a lot of eyes on him. We're hoping that if we eliminate the big plays - those runs he has of 70 yards - and at least make them grind it out, we could be in a good position to win."

Shoulders, the Indians' 6-2, 180-pound junior quarterback, has played through minor injuries while accumulating 247 yards on the ground, of which 215 came in the season opener. Three other backs, Dalton Vories, Wyatt Rinsch and Austin Wanke, have all had games of at least 98 yards rushing.

"I'd say (Shoulders) will be about 90 percent on Friday. He's going to be a key factor," Wood said. "We'll watch him in practice this week. We'll hold him out of certain drills and that kind of thing, and hope to get 90 percent out of him."

It's the first Egyptian Division game for both teams, who along with Olney, figure to compete for the championship.

Nolen says the Maroons have yet to play to their potential. They played well in the second half of an opening week win at Watseka, and simply outmanned Red Hill in last week's 53-6 victory

"It's hard to judge how good we are based on that game," he said. "Our goal is weekly improvement and that's what we'll try to do this week."

It's much the same for LHS, which was sluggish in a 26-8 opening win over Edwards County before blasting Oblong, 57-8, last week.

"We'll have to be real solid and make them earn everything they get," Wood said. "Our defense has played real well that last couple of weeks and that's going to be the major thing. We need to play good defense and force them to do things they're not used to doing."

Games notes: Friday's 7 p.m. game will be broadcast on Lawrenceville radio station WAKO, 910 AM and 103.1 FM, with Steve Anderson at the microphone ... Robinson holds 46-42 lead in the all-time series with the Indians, including last year's 20-0 shutout. Robinson has won the last 10 meetings with the Indians. Lawrenceville's last win over the Maroons was a 14-0 decision on Aug. 31, 1990 ... Wood is 13-8 in his third season coaching the Indians and has a career mark of 93-59...Nolen is 22-27 in his sixth season coaching the Maroons. He'd previously coached for 14 seasons at Mt. Zion where his teams were a combined 84-57.
