Flora 27, Red Hill 8
Salukis score first, then run out of gas

FLORA - Flora quarterback Ethan Leib rushed for a touchdown in every quarter Friday night, helping the host Wolves to a 27-8 over Red Hill High School's football team in the opening game of the season.

The Salukis scored first, as a 47-yard, nine-play drive was capped by Tristan Holtz's 5-yard run.

But Leib countered with a 1-yard TD run in the opening period and an 18-yard scoring run with 3:06 to play in the first half, which led to Flora's 14-8 lead at the intermission.

The Wolves put the game away as Leib scored from two yards out midway through the third period and added a 3-yard TD run with 1:42 to play.

"I told the kids I was really proud of them for that first quarter," second-year Red Hill coach Billy Gray said. "They played Red Hill football that first quarter."

Gray said the heat and humidity took a toll on the Salukis, who had about 30 players in uniform, about half the number of Flora.

"We couldn't maintain (the momentum), with the heat and our lack of depth," Gray said. "You hate to make excuses, but that's what I blame it on. We just couldn't sustain it for the rest of the game."

Leib proved to be a dual threat as he carried 20 times and piled up 98 of Flora's 124 rushing yards while completing 11 of 13 passes for 110 yards and an interception.

Holtz was the Salukis' workhorse as he carried 13 times for 90 yards.

The Red Hill passing game was nearly non-existent as sophomore quarterback Dalton Murray attempted just five passes. He completed one, for 13 yards, to Steven Ramsaran and was also picked off once.

Murray also passed to Ramsaran after the Holtz TD run, giving the Salukis an 8-0 lead at the 5:28 mark of the opening period.

The Salukis will travel to Robinson for a non-conference game Friday, while the Wolves of coach Scott Warren hope to win for the second straight week when they visit Palestine.
