High school volleyball preview
Young Indians will see plenty of action
LAWRENCEVILLE - Meet this year's Lawrenceville High School volleyball team, and next year's, too.

Second-year coach Trinity Britton has 16 players in the program but only one, Kourtney Osmon, is a senior. The other 15 figure into both the Indians' short-term and long-term plans.

"Kourtney is a great leader," said Britton, whose team was 3-31 a year ago and enters the season on an eight-match losing streak. "I really think her leadership will lead us to more wins this year."

Eight others will suit up at the varsity level for the Indians, while also playing in junior varsity matches.

"It's best for our program to get them two years' experience in one," Britton said. "We want them to see that they can be competitive at the JV level and get that extra time learning on the court. We're a young team, but the good thing about that is that everything we can learn this year, we can retain."

Osmon is penciled in as a setter, opposite of sophomore Abby Higginbotham. Freshman Brianna Mefford, the Indians' tallest player, will start in the middle for the Indians, while junior Amanda Seed will be an outside hitter. Morgan Mefford, a sophomore, will serve as the team's libero. Juniors Sadie Newlin and Mattie White and sophomore Kazia Frederick are also in the running for starting spots, while junior Allisha Hartz is slated to see playing time.

Sophomore Sidney Sullens and freshmen Haylee Croslow, Courtney Ridgley, Mikayla Bales, Madison Carter, Julia Camarillo and Natalee Reynolds will play at the freshman-sophomore level.

"We've got a group of girls who want to play volleyball and they want to get better," Britton said. "They want the person next to them to be good as well. The team concept is really there."

Britton says the idea is to "set small goals and make small steps."

"We'll be setting goals with each game, and if we meet those I'll be happy if we can make it through the season and keep the camaraderie among the girls."

The Indians open the season Thursday, with a home match against Hutsonville.
