For Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame
Chairman in search of items
LAWRENCEVILLE - Bruce Firchau is likely busier than any political candidate.

Although he's not running for office, Firchau spends most of his spare time stumping for the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame Museum, of which he is chairman.

Firchau - after making a couple of early morning stops on his way south - spent Friday morning in Lawrence County, with visits to both Lawrenceville and Red Hill high schools. Then it was off to Crawford County, for a few more stops.

The museum is scheduled to open next year in Danville, at the David S. Palmer Arena.

"It's Danville's job to raise the money to make sure this happens," said Firchau, who is the boys basketball coach at Elgin Westminster Christian during the season. "My job is to go around speaking about the museum and collecting the memorabilia. I have the easy job."

The museum will combine video, exhibits, interactive presentations, photos and memorabilia to allow fans to soak up the history of basketball in Illinois.

Firchau is seeking letter jackets, programs, pictures, films, scrapbooks, etc., for the museum. He notes that he already has some items from Lawrenceville High School, which were donated a couple of years ago.

Firchau says the museum will cover all aspects of basketball.

"We'll start with junior high basketball and go all the way up to the professional level," he said. "It will be all-encompassing. It won't be just high school basketball, but that will be the greatest part of it."

While pictures, plaques, etc., will take up a lot of space, Firchau is more excited about the interactive exhibits. There is already a lot of film footage available, and Firchau is in the process of conducting video interviews with Illinois basketball legends.

Those who have items to donate can contact Firchau at 312-501-5174 or via email at firchau@sbcglobal.net.
