Illinois District 1 12-year-old All-Stars
Olney tops Lawrence Co., 6-3
OLNEY - Lawrence County now faces a long road to the championship in the District 1 12-year-old Little League All-Star Tournament.

Host Olney overcame an early 2-0 deficit on Monday, and sent Lawrence County into the loser's bracket with a 6-3 triumph.

Lawrence County returns tonight to face Salem in a 7 p.m. elimination game. Those teams played in Monday's opening round, with Lawrence County emerging with a 5-1 victory. Salem stayed alive in the tournament Tuesday by blasting Mount Carmel, 13-3, in a loser's bracket game.

Lawrence County scored twice in the opening inning Tuesday, and carried the 2-0 lead to the bottom of the third. Olney took control by scoring four runs in the third inning, and clinched the game with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Lawrence County cut the Olney lead to 4-3 when Case Benson belted a solo homer to lead off the top of the fourth.

Lawrence County had a good chance to regain the lead in the fifth inning, when it loaded the bases with nobody out. However Olney's Pierce Jones entered at that point, and escaped the jam by striking out three consecutive batters. In all, Jones faced five batters and fanned them all.

Aside from Benson's homer, Lawrence County had a double from Connor O'Dell and singles from Landen Ray and Connor McKinney.

Drew Moore, the first of four Lawrence County pitchers, went 2 2/3 innings on the mound and took the loss. Dylan McGuire, Benson and O'Dell also pitched in the loss.
