Illinois District 1 12-year-old All-Stars
Lawrence Co. wins opener
OLNEY - Lawrence County's debut in District 1 All-Star tournament play was a success.

The Lawrence County 12-year-old team handled Salem, 5-1, in the tournament opener at Olney Monday evening. Lawrence County will face the host team at 5:30 p.m. today, with the winner advancing to Thursday's championship. The winner of today's game will be only one victory away from the title.

Monday's game was the first ever for a combined Lawrence County team. In past years, both Lawrenceville and Bridgeport had sent teams to the District Tournament.

Landen Ray scattered four hits through 5 1/3 innings Wednesday to earn the victory, while Drew Moore and Keegan Meek both delivered two-run hits in Lawrence County's four-run second inning.

Ray fanned nine and walked three while giving up a run in the third inning. Dylan McGuire relieved and fanned the only two hitters he faced to end the game.

Moore's two-run double with two outs in the top of the second put Lawrence County on top. Meek drove in two more runs with a base hit later in the inning.

Connor O'Dell scored Lawrence County's final run in the fourth, on a series of walks and errors.

O'Dell and Cade Benson singled for the only other Lawrence County hits.

A key moment came in the bottom of the third, when Salem had the bases loaded with nobody out. Shortstop O'Dell fielded a grounder and tagged a Salem runner who'd been on second base, then stepped on the bag for a double play. Although a run scored on the play, Ray was able to retire the next hitter to get out of the inning.

Moore will pitch for Lawrence County this evening in the game against Olney.

Salem and Mount Carmel will square off in a loser's bracket game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Only one game is slated for Wednesday, as the Lawrence County-Olney loser will face the Salem-Mount Carmel winner at 7 p.m.

Other Little League District 1 all-star tournaments, as well as a Babe Ruth southern state tournament, will begin later this week.

Lawrenceville will host the 10-year-old district tournament starting Saturday. Mount Carmel will open the tournament against Salem at 1 p.m., while Olney and the host Lawrence County team will play each other at 3.

The tourney will continue with two games Sunday and one game each on Monday, a week from tonight and possibly July 17.

Salem will host the 11-year-old district tournament, which will also start Saturday. Lawrence County will face Mount Carmel in the 5:30 p.m. opening game. Olney and the host Salem squad are slated to play at 7:30.

That tournament will also continue with two games on Sunday.

Lawrence County will also send a team to the 15-year-old Southern State Tourney in Mattoon starting Thursday.

Lawrence County will play the host Mattoon team in Thursday's 4 p.m. game, after Crawford County and Wabash Valley play in the 2 p.m. opener.

The tournament will continue at 6 p.m. Thursday with Paris playing the Lawrence County-Mattoon winner, while the losers of Thursday's first two games will conclude the evening at 8 p.m.

The tournament will continue with three games Friday and two Saturday if necessary.
