Albright Motors-Lawrence County Open
Schenk repeats at LCCC
LAWRENCEVILLE - Vincennes golfer Adam Schenk played well enough in Saturday's opening round that he was able to coast to his second straight championship in the Albright Motors-Lawrence County Open at Lawrence County Country Club.

Schenk fired an 8-under-par 64 to open a four-shot lead on Saturday, and finished with a 2-under-par Sunday to card a two-day total of 134, 10 strokes under par.

The score was four shots off the tournament record of 130, which Schenk shot while winning the County Open for the first time a year ago.

Mitch Blackburn, also of Vincennes, was the runner-up for the second straight year. Blackburn shot a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday and trailed Schenk by five shots. The best Blackburn could do was to match Schenk's 2-under-par 70 during Sunday's round, to finish with a 5-under-par total of 139, five shots behind the winner.

Chris Cassell, who carded the second-best opening round with a 4-under-par 68, placed third with a 2-under-par 140 after shooting an even par 72 on Sunday.

John Royer (69-73 - 142) and Lawrenceville's Zach Manley (75-70 - 145) rounded out the top five.

Schenk, coming off a junior season at Purdue in which he earned All-Big Ten Conference honnors, is the first player to win the title in consecutive years since Chris Keen, Brazil, Ind., in 2000 and 2001. The only players to have won more than twice in a row are Jerry Schreiber, who won every year from 1967 through 1970, and Richie Moore, who won four straight from 1978 to 1981. Schenk is now one of 13 players to have claimed the Lawrence County Open on multiple occasions.

A Flight

Steve Potts, Bridgeport, led wire to wire to win A Flight for the second time.

Potts shot a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead over both Brett Bean and Rob Dean.

While Potts had a tougher time on Sunday, shooting 76, so did the others.

In the end, Potts won with a 3-over-par 147, three shots ahead of both Tom Senger and Ryan McClure. Dean (151) and Doug Hardacre completed the top five.

B Flight

Roger Meneley, Terre Haute, Ind., shot an even-par 72 on Saturday to take a four-shot lead and was never threatened.

Meneley shot a 5-over-par 77 on Sunday to finish with a 5-over-par total of 149, four shots better than both Jeff Baughman, Lawrenceville and Larry Fossi, Terre Haute.

Lawrenceville's Tad Shick battled back from shooting 82 in the opening round to place fourth (156), while Chuck Adamson (157) completed the top five.

C Flight

Cody Perrott, a Lawrence County native who now resides in the Indianapolis area, shot an even-par 72 in Saturday's opening round and held on for a narrow win.

Perrott returned Sunday to shoot 81, for a two-day total of 153. That was good enough to beat Marvin Keith, Terre Haute, by one shot, as Keith worked his way into contention with a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday.

Denny Holloway and Dink Simonson both shot 156 to tie for third, while Troy Weber (162) was fifth.

D Flight

Larry Tackett, Terre Haute, used a consistent 79-81 effort to shoot 160 and win by a shot over Dick Stockberger, Steve Tabor (163), Jeff Moore (164) and Nick Claycomb (165) completed the top five.

Seniors

Dick Snyder, who resides in Florida, shot a 5-over-par 77 on Sunday to finish with a 14-over-par 158 in the flight for players 60 and over with a handicap of 13 or higher.

Lenn Jamerson, Bridgeport, was tied for the lead after Saturday's round and eventually shot 165 to place second. Jack Hudson (166), Bill Brown (167) and Gus Solomon (168) rounded out the top five.

LCCC Shootout

In the LCCC Shootout, sponsored by Halter Machine and Lawrence County Mini-Storage, Cassell defended his title, with Schenk finishing second.

Cassell became the first player in the history of the event to claim consecutive victories.
