Indians rally late, but fall short in loss to Wolves
MOUNT CARMEL - Despite all of its struggles this season, Lawrenceville High School's baseball team went out swinging Wednesday.

The Indians, after making six errors in the first two innings of their 8-6 regional loss to top-seeded Flora, rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and had the bases loaded when the game came to a close.

"I'm proud of these guys," said LHS coach Josh Benefiel, whose team finished with a 2-18 slate. "The start of the game couldn't have been any worse. But we kept fighting, and in the top of the seventh we had a chance to take the lead."

The Indians staked starting pitcher Gage McIntosh to a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Braxton Blagrave singled and Ryan Seed followed with a walk. Both came home on Jeff Baxter's one-out single to left.

But things quickly turned sour for the Indians at that point. After the first batter was retired, three straight Wolves reached base via error. McIntosh walked three more in the inning, as the Wolves took a 3-2 lead without connecting for a hit.

The less-than-stellar play continued in the second, as the Wolves stretched their lead to 6-2 by scoring three more runs with the help of three more errors and only one hit.

McIntosh left the game after 1 1/3 innings having given up six runs, none of which were earned, on no hits. He walked four batters and struck out three.

Blagrave, who'd tossed a seven-inning complete game just two days earlier in a 10-5 win over Fairfield, pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for LHS. He gave up six hits and two runs - neither of which were earned - while walking nobody and fanning a pair.

The Tribe scored its third run in the fourth inning, when Thomas Mahrenholz singled and was driven home by Blagrave's base hit.

The Indians trailed 8-3 entering their final at-bat, when they rallied for three runs on just one hit.

Blagrave and Ryan Seed both drew walks to begin the seventh against Flora reliever Christian Taylor and McIntosh reached on an error as Blagrave crossed the plate. Baxter singled to drive in his third run of the game, and Jacob Seed's groundout scored McIntosh as the Indians cut the lead to 8-6.

Slayton Dorney walked to load the bases before Dalton Sholders grounded to third to end the game.

Baxter singled three times to pace the LHS attack, while Blagrave and Mahrenholz both singled twice.

Kyle Nicholson had two hits for the Wolves (20-14), including the game's only extra-base hit, a triple.

Flora advances to Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game. The Wolves await the winner of today's game between second-seeded Carmi and the host third-seeded Golden Aces.
