Red Hill girls win title, boys place second
Saluki runners shine at their own invitational
BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School's track and field teams have had an inactive spring to date, but the Salukis were in top form Friday when they hosted their own invitational meets.

The Salukis were first in the six-team girls field while Red Hill's boys team was second in a four-team field.

Girls meet

The Salukis, who'd run only once previously this spring, topped the field with 152 points. Red Hill finished ahead of Flora (122), Paris (104), Casey (64), Lawrenceville (54) and Palestine (10).

The Salukis had an MVP-type performance from junior Heather Perry, who claimed first place in three events and ran a leg on a winning relay team.

Perry claimed the triple jump by leaping 31-11 1/2 inches. She also won both hurdles races in convincing fashion. Perry won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.82 seconds, more than a second ahead of runnerup Maggie Lawrence, who was second in 18.47. Perry later coasted to a win in the 300 low hurdles in 53.97 seconds more than two seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

To top things off, Perry teamed with Chey Frederick, Shelby Seitzinger and Kelsi Perrott to win the 400 relay in 53.28.

Three other Salukis put forth first-place efforts on the bright, sunny day at the RHHS track.

Freshman Jamesha Western, competing at the varsity track and field level for the first time, won the shot put with a toss of 32-5. Senior Katie Liberman circled the track in 1:05.37 to win the 400-meter dash. Meredith Spitz, another senior, won the longest individual event of the day, claiming the 3,200 in 14:13.27.

Lawrenceville's only winner was sophomore Hannah Holmes in the 1,600.

Boys meet

Flora had winners in just five of the 17 events, but used its depth to outdistance the Salukis in the team standings, 156-138. Lawrenceville (90) and Palestine (84) completed the field.

The Salukis had a trio of individual winners and claimed one of the four relay races.

Red Hill's Benny Douglas stormed home first in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.89 seconds. In addition, Connor Holmes breezed to a first-place finish in the 3,200 (11:13.01) and Tyler Tewell was not pushed while claiming the 800 (2:16.22).

All four county teams are slated to return to action at one point in time this week.
