LHS baseball team falls in nine innings
GREENUP - The quest for the first win of the season will continue for Lawrenceville High School's baseball team.

The Indians were denied again on Thursday, this time in extra innings. Host Cumberland scored a run with two out in the ninth inning and nipped LHS in Little Illini Conference play, 5-4.

"It was a tough loss," said LHS coach Josh Benefiel, whose team fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the Little Illini Conference. "We had some good chances to score some more runs, but didn't take advantage of them."

Earlier losses were to Flora, Olney and Paris.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first and stretched their lead to 4-2 by scoring three times in the second inning.

Cumberland scored a run in the third inning and another in the sixth to tie the game. The Pirates finally emerged in the ninth, using a walk, a stolen base, a throwing error and a ground ball to score the winning run.

Matt Siegel had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Indians, while Braxton Blagrave doubled and contributed two RBIs. Cody Steffey singled for the Indians' only other hits.

The four-run effort came on the heels of a loss at Paris Saturday, in which the Indians were the victims of a perfect game.

The Indians had a good chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, when they loaded the bases with one out. However, the Pirates used a strikeout and a pop fly to get out of the jam.

In the meantime, LHS pitchers Blagrave and Siegle combined to pitch a five-hitter. THe left-handed Blagrave gave up four runs on four hits while pitching the first 6 1/3 innings. He walked only one batter while striking out six.

Siegel pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and took the loss. He gave up a run on a hit. He walked four batters while striking out three.

Both teams committed three errors in the extra-inning contest.

The Indians return to play Monday when they'll host rival Red Hill at 4:30 p.m.
