High school softball
Salukis struggle at plate, take 6-2 loss
BRIDGEPORT - Visiting Hutsonville got even with Red Hill High School's softball team Thursday.

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and never trailed on the way to a 6-3 Little Illini Conference win over the Salukis.

The teams have now split a pair of games, as the Salukis were 4-2 victors over the Tigers when they met in a tournament at Noble on March 16.

The Salukis had only five hits against Tiger pitcher Kennedy Surrells.

"We were very lethargic," Red Hill coach Amy Moan said. "I think we forgot to bring out bats. We were hitting dinkers. We only struck out twice today, but we weren't hitting the ball out of the infield."

Surrells gave up single runs in each of the first two innings, but held RHHS scoreless the rest of the way. She struck out two batters and walked only one.

Cheyanne Moan, who pitched the first 1 1/3 innings, suffered the pitching loss. She gave up three hits and three runs, all earned.

Brittany Fiscus pitched the final 5 2/3 innings for Red Hill and was charged with three runs on seven hits. Fiscus walked a batter and fanned four.

Maran Tennis doubled, singled and drove in a run for Red Hill. Andi Tennis singled twice while Jailee Richards added a base hit.

The Tigers scored twice in the opening inning as Surrells and Nicole Kiger hit back-to-back balls that fell for doubles in the outfield and Katie Williams singled.

Red Hill cut the gap to 2-1 by scoring in the first. Tennis singled and scored with two out when Taylor Paulin reached on an error.

The Tigers stretched the lead to 3-1 in the second, while Calee Fulling homered with two out, driving Moan from the game.

Red Hill scored its final run in the second when Richards singled and came home on a two-out double by Tennis.

The Tigers closed out the scoring in the fourth when they pecked away for three runs on five singles.

The Salukis will be without senior shortstop Dakotah Moan for an extended period of time, according to coach Moan. Dakotah Moan was hit in the face by a softball in practice last week and sustained a broke nose, among other injuries. She is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday, the coach said.

The Salukis return to action today against Robinson.
