Salukis bounce back, beat their county rivals

BRIDGEPORT - Neither Lawrence County high school softball team was overly pleased about the way it played Thursday, but at the end of a long, cold battle, both were glad to be able to go home and warm up.

Host Red Hill scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to offset a two-run blast in the top of the inning by the Indians' McKenzi Kelly and held on for a 10-9 win over Lawrenceville.

"We did all right today," said Red Hill coach Amy Moan, after her team improved to 3-1, despite three fielding errors. "I hope it's not the prettiest game we'll play. But it's a win."

The Indians, playing for the first time this season, were unable to overcome seven errors in the field and countless other mental miscues.

"For lack of a better word we made some freshman errors," LHS coach Dave Berry said. "The problem was, it was juniors and seniors who were making them. Some of the things we did wrong, we know better. But we'll work it out."

After both teams scored three runs in the opening inning, the Salukis took command in the bottom of the second with four runs on two hits and with the help of two LHS errors.

The Indians pecked away at the lead with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth. Then, in the sixth, LHS used a one-out double by Kary Trinkle and Kelly's two-out blast to left to take a 9-8 lead.

Red Hill bounced back in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits. The Salukis tied the game when Cheyanne Moan singled, then scored on a wild pitch. Tori Paulin, who had walked, scored the winning run on a single by Dakotah Moan.

"These girls usually don't fold," coach Moan said. "I wasn't surprised when we bounced back. I wasn't expecting us to have that many defensive errors, and for the game to be that close."

In the top of the seventh, Cheyanne Moan, who had relieved in the top of the second inning, set the Indians down in order.

Aside from Kelly's round-triple and Trinkle's two-bagger, the Indians had singles from Breanna Shick, Lindsey Baker, Heather Miller, Katy Trinkle and Shyloh Hearn.

Maran Tennis singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Salukis, while Dakotah Moan also singled and doubled. Tori Paulin, Taylor Paulin, Andi Tennis and Baelee Holloway added base hits.

Cheyanne Moan, who pitched the final six innings, earned her third pitching win of the season, She allowed four hits, walked four and fanned five. Only two of the six runs she allowed were earned.

Brittany Fiscus started on the mound for RHHS, but was lifted after allowing a hit and two walks. All three runners scored. Marissa Roark finished the inning, allowing two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Shick pitched into the third inning for LHS, allowing eight runs, only one of which was earned. She gave up four hits, walked two and fanned one.

While pitching the final four innings, Hearn allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits. She walked a batter with no strikeouts.

"We need to play eight or nine games and find our groove," Berry said. "After that happens I think we'll be pretty good."

The Indians are scheduled to host Noble at 4 p.m. Monday at Phil Alsman Field.

The Salukis are off until Thursday, when they'll host Hutsonville.
