Flora 10, Lawrenceville 6
Early errors prove costly as LHS opens with loss
LAWRENCEVILLE - Visiting Flora took advantage of three Lawrenceville errors to score five runs in the opening inning Friday, on the way to a 10-6 win over the Indians' baseball team at Unit 20 Ballpark.

The Wolves (1-0) had three hits in the opening inning, but the three LHS errors added fuel to the fire.

"It seems like sometimes those errors can be very contagious," said LHS coach Josh Benefiel. "In the first inning, when that first ball went through the legs, you could see our guys get kind of antsy, Take away those plays our guys should have made, it's 6-5 for us."

Only one of the six runs LHS starter Braxton Blagrave allowed through four innings was earned. The Indians also used Cole Steffey, who gave up four runs - all earned - in two innings on the mound, and Matt Siegle, who pitched a perfect seventh inning.

The Indians outhit the Wolves, 6-5, with junior catcher Ryan Seed delivering a single and a double. Steffey added a run-scoring two-bagger for the Tribe, while Blagrave, Siegle and Jeff Baxter all connected for RBI singles.

Thomas Mahrenholz added to the attack by walking four times, scoring twice.

"I'm happy with the way our guys were swinging the bats today," Benefiel said. "I've been happy with that all winter."

The Indians trailed 5-0 when they scored their first run in the third inning. Seed singled to center, stole second, and came home on Siegle's base hit. LHS cut the lead to 6-2 an inning later when Mahrenholz worked Flora starter Christian Taylor for a walk and scored on Baxter's two-out hit to right.

Lawrenceville trailed 10-2 when it came to bat in the bottom of the sixth, but rallied for three runs on a pair of hits.

Mahrenholz and Brody Shaffer drew one-out walks against Flora reliever Bryce Pearce, and both scored on Seed's two-out double to right. Seed later scored on a base hit by Blagrave.

LHS concluded the scoring with a run in the seventh. With two out, LHS first baseman Austin Bowler reached on the only Flora error of the game. Bowler came home on Steffey's double to center.

Blagrave allowed six runs, only one of which was earned, while pitching the first four innings. He allowed four hits, walked two batters and fanned three.

Steffey struggled with his control during his two innings on the mound, as he walked five batters and fanned two. He gave up only one but was touched for four runs, all earned.

Siegle was impressive in the seventh, as he set the Wolves down in order, including a strikeout to start the frame.

LHS will host Oblong in a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. today. They play at Olney at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will travel to Martinsville at 4 p.m. Thursday.
