Indians handle Cumberland to snap losing skid

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrenceville Indians withstood a late 3-point barrage and held on to defeat the Cumberland Pirates and snap a 10-game losing skid Friday evening.

The Indians led by 22 points with less than six minutes to play and watched the visitors cut the lead to seven with 1:39 left before posting a 77-67 win.

With the Little Illini Conference victory, the Tribe is now 5-19 overall and 2-8 in league. The Pirates fell to 3-22 and 1-9.

Lawrenceville coach Randy Bishop said with the season winding down, special events being held to honor past players and performances in the Lawrenceville gym, have meant a lot to his team.

"We challenged them a little bit about Indian heritage and the blood and they came out and played," Bishop said. "It's been a long dry spell. Ten losses in a row is hard to overcome, but they played better tonight. I thought they came to compete."

Senior Austin Dorney scored a career-high 30 points to pace an Indians attack that featured three players in double figures. Freshman Brandt Cochran also had a career high with 19 points with Braxton Blagrave tossing in 16.

The Tribe won the battle of the boards as well, outrebounding the Pirates 34-28. Dorney had a double-double with 11 rebounds to go with his big scoring night. Freshman Harry Loeb pulled down nine rebounds with Cochran bringing down eight.

"I thought Dorney played a nice game tonight. I thought Harry (Loeb) did a nice job on the boards and Braxton has been pretty consistent shooting," Bishop said, noting that Cochran is gaining more confidence with every game. "A lot of shooting is confidence and when your not hitting them it's hard. Tonight he made some shots."

Cochran scored 10 points in the third quarter on 4-for-4 shooting including two baskets from behind the arc.

With just under six minutes to play and a 22-point lead, it looked like the Indians were going to coast to the home win before a large crowd, however five 3-pointers down the stretch, three by Trevor Brumleve, allowed Cumberland to cut the lead to seven with 1:39 left.

Brumleve came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 23 points, including 5-for-9 from 3-point land. Colton Ingram added 14 points and freshman Samuel Bauguss scored 10 in a reserve role.

Of Cumberland's 67 points, 43 came from reserves.

Lawrenceville never trailed, jumping out to a 7-0 lead en route to its first win of 2013. The Indians led 22-8 after one quarter before the Pirates rallied to cut the gap to 33-30 at halftime and 35-34 early in the third quarter.

A 21-6 run over the next six minutes pushed the Indians led to 16 points. Lawrenceville then scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter for its biggest lead of the night.

Bishop hopes his team's big night will propel the Indians to a strong finish.

"I'm hoping that will carry us in to next week. We've got two left. I'm hoping we can get both of those," he said

The following week Lawrenceville will face Fairfield in the Hamilton County Class 2A regional at McLeansboro.

In the junior varsity game, the Indians posted a 56-37 win behind freshman Jordan Shick's 21 points.

Tuesday, the Tribe travels to Carmi for a non-conference game before closing out the regular season with a Friday home game against league opponent Olney. It is the final scheduled game in the historic LHS gym.
