Indians struggle, but six earn sectional berths
MOUNT CARMEL - Lawrenceville High School's wrestling team was hoping for its first regional championship since 1998 Saturday, but was never able to garner any momentum and eventually placed sixth in the nine-team field.
While the Indians had no individual champions Saturday, six of their 13 competitors were able to advance to next week's sectional at Vandalia by finishing second or third.
In the end it was a disappointing showing, especially coming off of a third-place showing at the Eastern Illinois Wrestling Classic.
"We didn't wrestle as well today as I thought we would," LHS coach Tom Tewell said. "I think we might have peaked a week early, last week. That's the way it goes. We faced some good teams here, and had some tough matches."
Three Indians - 152-pounder Thomas Grove, 182-pounder Max Andersen and heavyweight Brandon Vessels - all wrestled for regional championships on Saturday, but fell in championship matches.
Three others - 132-pounder Zach Kocher, 160-pounder Gage McIntosh and 170-pounder Jacob Wirth - will wrestle in Vandalia after placing third. In addition, 120-pounder Jacob McKinstry and 138-pounder Hoa Bobe placed fourth, just missing out on a sectional berth.
"We'll have to go at it hard in practice this week and see if we can get some people to state," Tewell said. "It will be a crapshoot."
Vessels (15-5) came close to winning a regional title for LHS, before being pinned by Carlyle's Dre Cannon in the final second of the match. Vessels had a 3-0 lead over Cannon (33-2) midway through the third period, but could not hang on. Cannon was able to take the LHS senior to his back as the clock was winding down, and was able to secure the pin as the buzzer sounded.
Vessels reached the championship match with a 4-3 win over Mount Carmel's Brett Morgan and a 7-3 decision over Robinson's Goeffrey Harrison.
Grove, a senior, lost a 6-2 decision to Mount Carmel's Beau Taylor in the championship match at 152 pounds. It was Taylor's third win over Grove (28-10) this season. Grove was trailing 4-2 in the waning seconds and shot a desperation takedown, which Taylor (30-4) was able to counter.
Likewise, Andersen (27-6) lost to a familiar foe in the 182-pound championship match - Mount Carmel's Sam Wampler, who has won two of three meetings with Andersen this season. Wampler was able to withstand Andersen's late rally and held on for a 3-2 decision.
At 160, McIntosh (28-8) rallied from 2-1 semifinal loss to Carlyle's Chris Maddox to earn a sectional berth. McIntosh pinned Mount Carmel's Parker Wilkinson in 5:03 to reach the third-place match, where he notched a 6-2 decision over Carmi's Brandon Pollard.
Kocher rallied from a 6-5 semifinal loss to Vandalia's Rodney Tedrick to also land a sectional berth at 132 pounds. Kocher (24-13) needed 1:14 to pin Mount Carmel's J.T. McCowen in the consolation semifinals, then secured his sectional berth by pinning Carlyle's Tanner Leith in the third-place match.
Wirth (20-16) had the last laugh against Olney's Tim Sturm and as a result placed third at 172 pounds. In the opening round Sturm scored a 14-6 major decision against Wirth. After Sturm lost in the semifinals and Wirth won two matches in the consolation bracket, the two wound up facing each other again, with a sectional berth on the line. Wirth was in control from start to finish this time, and eventually pinned Sturm in 4:16.
McKinstry finished his sophomore season with a 17-12 mark after being pinned by Fairfield's Dakota Boatner in the third-place match at 120 pounds. McKinstry won his opening match, 11-1, over Carmi's Justin Weinbrecht but was pinned by Carlyle's Zack Zvonar in the semifinals. McKinstry reached the third-place match with a 10-8 decision over Mount Carmel's Beau Johnson,
Bobe concluded his junior season with a record of 8-7. Bobe opened the day with an 8-3 decision of Mount Carmel's Tyler Moore before being pinned by Fairfield's Braden Robertson in the semifinals. Bobe rebounded by pinning Carmi's Randall Essary in 3:48, but was suffered a 9-2 setback to Olney's Daylan Brach in the third-place match.
Evan Briner, a sophomore at 126 pounds, also reached the semifinals after opening his day with a pin of Carlyle's Luke Zvonar in 2:30. Briner was pinned by Robinson's Alec Keeler in 5:53 in the championship semifinals and was pinned by Olney's Ben Lynch in the consolation semifinals to finish the season with a 10-15 record.
Others who wrestled for the Lawrenceville-Red Hill cooperative team on Saturday were freshman Tyler Thompson (8-24) at 106, junior Ryan Seed (9-15), who won two matches Saturday at 145, Shawn Rogers (13-19) at 195 and junior Trevor Richards (20-14) at 220.
