Andersen wins at 182, nine others place
Lawrenceville wrestlers third at Eastern Illinis Classic
ST. JOSEPH- After 10 of 13 Lawrenceville High School wrestlers placed at Saturday's Eastern Illinois Wrestling Classic, the Indians are eying their first regional championship since 1998.

The Indians' Max Andersen claimed the 182-pound championship, while Zach Kocher (132) and Trevor Richards (220) both placed second, helping the team score 155 points and claim third place in the 14-team field. Host St. Joe-Ogden (193 1/2) and Champaign Central (175) were the only teams to finish ahead of the Indians.

The meet was the last before Saturday's Illinois High School Association Class A regional at Mount Carmel.

"We finished sixth last week against some good competition at LeRoy," LHS coach Tom Tewell said. "We finished third today, and we hope to keep moving up. We want to be peaking at the regional."

A trio of LHS seniors, Thomas Grove (152), Gage McIntosh (160) and heavyweight Brandon Vessels scored third-place finishes for LHS, while junior Hoa Bobe was fourth at 138. In addition, 170-pound junior Jacob Wirth and 195-pound senior Shawn Rogers both finished fourth while sophomore Jacob McKinstry was sixth at 120.

"I was really pleased with most everybody's performance today," Tewell said. "There were a couple of matches where some kids could maybe have given a little more, but that's all. We've stressed all year that if you lose your first match in the championship bracket not to get down on yourself. The wins and pins (in the consolation bracket) add up. Today, almost everybody kept fighting for every point and that was nice."

Andersen, who is now 26-5, was a 13-4 winner over Cumberland's Colt Brummer in the championship match. The LHS junior reached the finals by pinning Oakwood-Fithian's Hunter Harrison in 32 seconds, then notching a 14-4 decision over Westville's Jeremy Rivers.

Kocher, who is now 20-12, reached the finals with a 12-4 decision of Effingham's Casey Holle and a pin of St. Joe-Ogden's Gage Haga in 5:19. In the 132-pound title match, Robinson's Andrew Gallagher decisioned Kocher, 6-2.

Richards, now 19-12, pinned Rantoul's Mitch Williams in 22 seconds and decisioned Cumberland's Kody Cohen, 6-1, to earn a berth in the 220-pound finals. Robinson's Tanner Keeler claimed the title by pinning Richards in 3:36.

Grove, McIntosh and Vessels all lost in the semifinals, but bounced back to claim third place. Grove, now 25-9, scored a 9-1 decision over Javen Cobb of Rantoul to take third place. McIntosh, 26-7, pinned Cumberland's Austin Jamison in 3:30 of the third-place match. Vessels, now 13-4, pinned Olney's Chris Wood in 1:59 to claim third place in the heavyweight division.

Lawrenceville is one of nine teams that will compete in the regional at Mount Carmel. The top three finishers in each weight class moves on to sectional competition at Vandalia Feb. 1 and 2.

In addition, the regional champion qualifies to take part in the team dual championship series. Saturday's regional champion will wrestle a dual against the winner of the West Frankfort regional for a spot in the team state finals.
