Lions dominate inside, pull away from Salukis

By

MARSHALL - The Marshall Lions dominated the inside and took advantage of Red Hill turnovers on the way to a 53-34 win in Little Illini Conference Tournament consolation action Monday night.

The Salukis trailed by 11, 26-15 at halftime and challenged the Lions in the second half by cutting the Marshall lead to six. Freshman guard Dalton Murray hit a 3-point basket with 3:18 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 30-24.

After that, however, the Lions ripped off 11 straight points to take a 41-24 lead with seven minutes left to play. Red Hill was unable to cut into the lead down the stretch.

The Salukis dropped their sixth game in a row and fell to 3-17. The loss eliminated Red Hill from the tournament. Marshall is now 15-7 and will move on in consolation play, taking on Olney at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Casey.

Red Hill coach Bryan Havill said defensive issues hurt the Salukis.

"They're a difficult matchup and they've got a lot of length, and they're quick, too. They posed a lot of matchup issues for us," Havill said. ""We gave a lot of lanes to the basket, but at the same time, I've been down here before and I was cautious to zone these guys because I've seen what they can do from the arc."

Marshall outrebounded the Salukis 27-16 with several offense rebounds leading to easy baskets. The Lions were also able to drive the lane for easy buckets against Red Hill's man-to-man defense.

From the outside, Red Hill didn't have an answer for 6-3 sophomore Keegan Steele.

With the Salukis ahead 6-4 with four minutes left in the first quarter, Marshall coach Tom Brannan replaced all five of his starters. Steele was one of those reserves entering the game.

After Jake Allen hit a 14-footer for Red Hill to extend the Salukis' lead to 8-4, Steele hit two 3-pointers and a layup for a 12-8 Marshall lead. In the second quarter, Steele hit two more 3-pointers and a two-point basket, giving him 16 by halftime.

Steele finished with 21 points and was the only Marshall player in double figures. Walker Berner scored nine points, with seven coming in the fourth period.

For Red Hill, Murray and freshman classmate Tanner Stoltz paced the Salukis with 10 and eight points respectively.

Senior Matthew Young, Red Hill's leading scorer on the season, was back in the lineup for Red Hill after missing two games with a concussion. Young scored six points and pulled down four rebounds.

While the Lions only shot 38.5 percent from the field, the Salukis were a little better, hitting 40 percent of its shots. The difference was Marshall was 20-for-52 from the field while Red Hill attempted 20 fewer shots and were 13-for-32.

Red Hill is now off until Feb. 1 when the Salukis will host Lawrenceville in a Little Illini Conference game.
