Tigers overcome Salukis
HUTSONVILLE - When Matt Young went down in the third quarter of Friday's basketball game, so did the chances of Red Hill's Salukis.

While enjoying a five-point lead early in the second half against host Hutsonville in Little Illini Conference play, the RHHS senior crashed to the floor, hitting the back of his head on a play under the Hutsonville basket.

After a delay of about 30 minutes, the Tigers took advantage of the situation by quickly scoring 16 straight points, thanks in part to a flurry of Saluki turnovers, and went on to notch a 55-47 victory.

According to RHHS coach Bryan Havill, Young was diagnosed with a "mild" concussion. He was taken by ambulance to Crawford County Hospital in Robinson and released later in the evening. His status for the Salukis' upcoming games is currently uncertain.

"They were taking a lot of precautions," Havill said. "He was pretty out of it."

The Salukis took their biggest lead of the game, 28-21, on a pair of free throws by Jake Allen with 6:17 to play in the third period.

Hutsonville (11-8, 3-4 LIC) went into attack mode at that point, scoring 16 points in a span of less than two minutes.

Red Hill turned the ball over six times in the period, and the Tigers drilled a trio of 3-point baskets to quickly turn the tide.

"We were playing well and had things going our way," said Havill, whose team fell to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in the LIC. "Losing (Young) hurts because he does a lot of things for us. Also, I think in that situation a delay is bad. When you're playing well the last thing you want is a long delay like that. It was kind of a double negative."

The Tigers eventually outscored Red Hill 24-11 in the period, turning the 21-19 halftime deficit into a 43-32 lead. Hutsonville led by as many as 13 points in the final stanza, but the Salukis refused to yield. Red Hill pulled to within 47-40 on a 3-point basket by Dalton Murray midway through the final period, but could get no closer.

"I told the kids before the game that there are a couple of things we have control over," Havill said. "We decide how hard we're going to play and we decide how we're gong to react when things don't go our way. I thought for the most part we did a pretty good job with that tonight."

Allen finished with 18 points, matching his season high, to pace the Salukis, while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Murray was also in double figures with 15 points, his top output for the season. Young added five points before being hurt, while Steven Ramsaran and Tanner Stoltz chipped in with four each and Ryan Kolb made a free throw,

The Salukis were without senior Noah Puntney, who missed the game due to the death of his grandfather.

Landon Williams scored 16 points for the Tigers, while Dylan Webster hit six of eight shots and scored 14 points, all in the second half.

Hutsonville won the junior varsity game, 42-35, as the Salukis fell to 0-9. Zach Breault led the Salukis with 14 points. Elijah Carroll added 11 and Tanner Stoltz 10 to account for the remainder of the RHHS scoring.

The Salukis will host Flora in LIC play Tuesday before beginning play in the conference tournament. Red Hill will travel to Casey on Friday to face Oblong in a 7 p.m. opening round game.
