Newton 66, Lawrenceville 41
Eagles open big lead, coast past Indians
LAWRENCEVILLE - Newton jumped out to a 21-8 lead after five minutes of play and coasted to a 66-41 win over the Lawrenceville Indians Friday night in Little Illini Conference action.

Newton held a huge 43-21 rebounding advantage which translated into many second and third shot opportunities over the first three quarters. The Eagles led 56-26 entering the fourth quarter and were never threatened.

The biggest lead of the night for the visitors was 64-26 with 4:40 to play.

"They're a very good team. It's hard for us to match up. Their big kids are like guards. They played really well, they passed the ball well," Lawrenceville coach Randy Bishop said. "They're just better than us right now. We hustled, we played hard, but they shut down Braxton Blagrave and got physical with (Austin) Dorney inside. The rest of our kids are pretty young and they just don't handle that pressure real well."

Newton's Keith Butler, a 6-5 left-handed senior center, was dominate on the inside scoring 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting and pulling down 10 rebounds - and all during the first three quarters.

Dylan Davidson, a 6-1 senior guard, added 11 points with 6-3 junior, Lucas Stone scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds. The Eagles, now 17-2 on the season and 5-2 in the Little Illini Conference, also got six rebounds from 6-4 Corey Davidson.

During a span stretching from midway through the second quarter through midway through the fourth quarter Newton outscored the Indians 37-12.

With the loss, the Indians have now dropped five games in a row and are 4-14 overall and 1-6 in league.

Bishops said there were some positives in the game, one of them being 13 points and five rebounds from 6-4 sophomore Joey Campbell in his first varsity start. Campbell was 5-for-7 from the field and made all three of his free throw attempts.

"There were a few bright things. The Campbell kid, who hasn't played a lot of organized basketball. He came in and played pretty hard, so I'm hoping in the future we can get him going a little bit," Bishop said. "I thought some of our guards hustled tonight. That was a positive."

Freshman Dylan Volkman earned extended playing time and scored seven points for Lawrenceville. It was the first varsity points for Volkman who was playing in just his third varsity game.

Freshman starter Harry Loeb missed his second straight game due to illness while Jacob Potts is out for the season, having suffered a broken ankle earlier in the week in practice.

In the junior varsity game, the Indians put four player in double figures en route to a 63-50 win. Volkman paced the JV Indians with 16 points. Nate Ladson scored 13 points, Jordan Shick 11 and Brady Benson 10.

Lawrenceville will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday when the Indians entertain Marshall in a Little Illini Conference game.
