Lady Salukis suffer two-overtime loss in LIC Tournament

By

GREENUP - Third-seeded Newton outscored Red Hill High School's girls basketball team 11-0 in overtime Saturday, on the way to a 52-41 victory in the Little Illini Conference at Cumberland's Waldrip Gym.

Both teams scored 41 points in regulation, but the Lady Eagles dominated the overtime period to advance to Tuesday's semifinals against second-seeded Olney.

As a result, the Lady Salukis (7-5) drop into the consolation bracket. They're slated to host Lawrenceville (3-14) in a consolation semifinal at 7 p.m. today, with hopes of playing games both Wednesday and Thursday.

The Lady Salukis trailed 9-8 after one quarter and 22-16 at halftime, but battled back to tie the score at 30 after three quarters.

Senior Taylor Paulin scored 12 points and was the only Lady Saluki to reach double figures. Dakotah Moan, Heather Perry and Jamesha Western all added six points in the loss, while Tori Paulin and Maran Tennis scored four apiece. Taylor Heath came off the bench to hit two free throws while Alexis Thacker rounded out the scoring with a point.

Newton's Morgan Swingler led all players with 19 points, including 10 of her team's 11 in the overtime.

The big difference in the game was at the foul stripe. Newton hit 23 of 35, including four of five in the OT, and was whistled for 13 fouls. The officials called 23 fouls on the Lady Salukis, who went to the foul line 13 times and made 10.

It was Newton's second win over the Lady Salukis this season. The Lady Eagles defeated Red Hill in Newton on Dec. 13, 47-42.

In Saturday's other quarterfinal games, second-seeded Olney dominated seventh-seeded Palestine, 57-26, fourth-seeded Casey coasted past Flora, 48-27 and top-seeded Olney hammered eighth-seeded Robinson, 81-18.

In Tuesday's semifinals Flora faces Marshall at 6 p.m., while Olney and Newton tangle at 7:30.

The consolation quarterfinals are set for this evening. While the Lady Salukis are hosting Lawrenceville, Edwards County visits Palestine, Oblong travels to Robinson and Casey hosts Cumberland.

The tournament will return to Cumberland for semifinal play on Tuesday, the consolation semifinals on Wednesday, the consolation championship and third-place game on Thursday and the title matchup on Friday.
