Indians fail to finish the job vs. Wolves
LAWRENCEVILLE - A fast start turned into a stellar first half for the Lawrenceville High School basketball team Friday night against Little Illini Conference rival Flora.

The second half was a different story as the Indians hit a wall to open the third quarter and the visiting Wolves took control and cruised to a 66-55 Little Illini Conference win.

Lawrenceville jumped out to a 12-2 early lead and were on top 39-38 at halftime before being outscored 18-2 over the first six minutes of the third quarter.

"That third quarter keeps being our problem ever time we play. We played a super first half. I thought we did a great job. In that third quarter we came out and stopped rebounding and then they got a bunch of layups on the offensive glass," said head coach Randy Bishop. "We just can't put the four quarters together against the better teams. They're probably the third or fourth best team in the conference and I actually thought that it was winnable."

The Indians fell to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in league play while Flora improved to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Flora's Ethan Lieb proved too much to handle for the Indians - inside and on the boards. The son of Wolves coach Phil Lieb, the 6-4 junior scored 23 points, almost all from within five feet of the basket, and pulled down 18 rebounds. Many of Lieb's baskets came on offensive rebounds.

For the Indians, senior Braxton Blagrave scored 18 points with 12 coming in the second quarter. Austin Dorney and Brandt Cochran each added 10. Both Dorney and Cochran scored eight first-half points.

After Lieb put the Wolves on top 2-0 to open the game, the Indians reeled off 10 unanswered points in about two minutes. Harry Loeb hit a 3-pointer, Cochran drained an 18-footer, Loeb hit another 3-pointer, Austin Wanke scored and Dorney hit a basket.

Flora cut into the Lawrenceville lead with the Tribe leading 19-15 after one quarter. In a fast-paced second period, the Indians' gradually extended the lead. The 39-38 halftime score was Lawrenceville's biggest advantage.

Flora led 50-45 after three quarters with its biggest lead being 66-53 in the closing seconds.

Bishop was encouraged by his team's first half and the steady improvements the young Indians are making.

"It's not all negative. We did a lot of things. We hurt them in the first half with some back-door cuts. We kind of got away from that in the second half and kind of got to standing again instead of cutting," Bishop said. "We felt like we could beat them down the floor in transition. In the third quarter we stopped pushing the ball up."

The Indians were playing without Jacob Potts, who Bishop said had to attend the funeral of a cousin killed in a bull-riding accident, and Trevor Lockhart, who is still sidelined with an ankle sprain.

"We're steadily getting better in a lot of departments," Bishop said, noting that his club needs to continue that trend with the conference tournament coming up soon. "I think we've shown that if we'll just play and put four (quarters) together that we can be in the championship."

Tuesday the Indians travel to Oblong for another conference contest.

The Indians dropped a 43-32 decision in the junior varsity game. Nathan Ladson led the Indians with 13 points.
