LHS's Andersen wins at 182; Team fifth in own invitational
LAWRENCEVILLE - Max Andersen won the 182-pound championship and more Saturday, at the 38th annual Lawrence County Tournament.

Andersen, a junior at Red Hill High School, was Lawrenceville High School's only champion and was voted the most outstanding wrestler in the 12-team affair.

Anderson's performance highlighted a day that saw Lawrenceville compile 123 1/2 points and finish fifth in the 12-team field.

Two other Indians, 152-pounder Gage McIntosh and 170-pounder Jacob Wirth, reached the championship match before falling. In addition, sophomore Tristan Davis wrestled his way to a third-place finish at 138 pounds, while senior Thomas Grove (152) tied for third and senior Zach Kocher (132) placed fourth.

"I'm not disappointed with the way we wrestled today," LHS coach Tom Tewell said. "A few of our matches could have turned out a little better, but I was happy with the overall outcome."

Andersen advanced to the championship against Mount Carmel's Sam Wampler by pinning West Frankfort's Jeremiah Teal in 19 seconds and beating Robinson's Nick Berty, 6-2.

The title match with Wampler went into overtime tied at 1-1. Neither wrestler scored in the opening two-minute period, while Wampler scored an escape in the second period and Andersen did the same in the third.

In the first 30-second overtime period, neither Andersen nor Wampler was able to score a takedown. Andersen escaped about 10 seconds into the second overtime period, then was able to ride Wampler out in the third period to earn the win.

"I've been waiting on (an Andersen-Wampler match) for a couple of years, and I'm glad Max got him," Tewell said. "It was a heck of a match. It went exactly how I thought it would. They're both good defensive wrestlers, and it's hard to keep either of them down on bottom."

Tewell said conditioning played a part in the win for Andersen and some of the other Indians.

"I think Max's match proved we're in good shape," Tewell said. "He had to have a full tank to win it."

McIntosh made an impressive run to the 160-pound championship buy pinning Carterville's Titus Farlow in 38 seconds, then notching a 12-0 decision against Brandon Pollard from Carmi. In the championship match, Marion's John Evetts used a five-point move to take early control on the way to a 7-2 decision of the LHS senior.

At 170, Wirth, a junior at Red Hill, pinned Effingham St. Anthony's Michael Stephens in 32 seconds and Carterville's Joe Behan in 5:04 to claim a spot in the finals. Once there, Carmi's Jake Russell pinned Wirth in 53 seconds.

At 138 pounds, Davis claimed third place by pinning Olney's Dalyn Brach in 2:44. Davis split his first two matches, then won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match.

At 152, Grove shared third-place with Olney's Jake Schmitt. According to Tewell, the two did not wrestle for third because it would have put them over the Illinois High School's limit for matches in a day. Grove reached the third-place match by winning four times and losing once.

Kocher dropped a 14-10 decision to Robinson's Andrew Gallagher in third-place match at 132. Kocher finished the day with two wins in four matches.

West Frankfort's Hadin Restivo became a four-time champion with his title at 145 pounds Saturday. Restivo won all three of his matches by pin, including a win over Mount Carmel's Justin Houck in 2:54 of the championship match.

Others who wrestled for LHS included Jacob McKinstry (120), Cole Westall (145), Shawn Rogers (195), Jake Greentree (220) and Trevor Richards (heavyweight).

The Indians will host Pike Central, Ind., in a dual at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday.
