LHS boys qualify for sectional
OLNEY - Lawrenceville High School's cross country program will be well-represented in the upcoming sectional meet at Effingham.

Lawrenceville's boys placed sixth in regional competition Saturday at Olney Central College to earn one of seven berths in this Saturday's sectional meet. Although Lawrenceville's girls team placed 10th in the team standings and did not qualify, Andie Scherer and Katie Liberman - both seniors at Red Hill High School - ran well enough to move on as individuals.

"Our teams have had injury and flu issues this week," LHS co-coach Bill Bandy said. "As a result, neither team was as strong as they could have been in the regional races. Nevertheless, we are very proud of these kids, because no matter what the circumstances, they always go to the starting line determined to do their best."

The top seven teams from the boys race moved on. Since there was a tie for seventh in the girls race, eight teams will advance to Effingham. Also, the top five individual runners who are not members of advancing teams will run at the sectional.

Robinson edged host Olney, 70-78, to take team honors. Effingham St. Anthony (90), Litchfield (128), Teutopolis (133), LHS (167) and Mount Carmel (207) also earned sectional slots.

Connor Holmes, a Red Hill sophomore, placed 13th in the field of 92 runners in 18:01 to lead the LHS efforts. LHS senior Zach Kocher wasn't far behind, placing 16th in 18:08. Dylan Volkman (34th in 18:56), Harry Loeb (51st in 20:01) and Tyler Tewell (56th in 20:25) completed the LHS scoring. Sophomore Tristan Davis, usually the Indians' third runner, was under the weather and placed 58th in 20:27. Wyatt Whewell rounded out the LHS lineup, as he ran 73rd in 21:08.

Robinson's Blake Hale was the individual winner in 16:27, 24 seconds ahead of Effingham St. Anthony's Peter Keller.

Girls meet

A week after running perhaps their best race of the season at the Peoria Heights Invitational, the Indians were slowed by injuries and illness and failed to advance.

Still, Scherer and Liberman had stellar performances to qualify for the sectional. Scherer ran 16th in the 89-runner field in 21:53, while Liberman was 24th in 22:30 and claimed the final individual qualifying spot.

Meredith Spitz, a Red Hill senior, closed out her career by finishing 35th in 23:09. Heather Hill (57th in 24:211,) and Hannah Burkhardt (64th in 25:12) also scored for LHS, while Chelsea Shoulders ran 74th in 26:09.

Five of the 20 teams at the sectional will advance to the state finals in Peoria on Nov. 3, as will the top five individuals not on those teams.
