Salukis play well, fall to Eastern champions
CASEY - Red Hill High School's football team played perhaps its best game of the season Friday evening, but it wasn't near enough against Little Illini Conference Eastern Division power Casey.
The host Warriors, ranked second in last week's Class 2A poll, took command with two touchdowns in the third quarter, on the way to a 29-7 win.
"I'd have to say it was one of the better games our kids have played this year," first-year Red Hill coach Billy Gray said. "We did a lot of things right, we were just outmanned. They have a lot more kids than we do, and a lot more upperclassmen. But I'm happy with the kids. The most important thing is, they had fun."
Casey took the lead less than four minutes into the game, as Austin Gildewell scored on an 11-yard run. The Warriors stretched the lead to 14-0 when quarterback Nico Stepina ran 12 yards for a score with 7:44 to play in the second period.
Casey put the game away in the third period on a 27-yard pass from Stepina to Levi Keigley and a 37-yard TD run by Ajaye Meeks.
The Salukis scored their touchdown with 5;12 remaining, when Derek Clevy broke free for a 77-yard run. The touchdown was the first for Red Hill in the second half this season.
"It was nice to break that open," Gray said. "We had three great blocks on that play. That's what happens when everybody does their job."
The Warriors (7-0, 5-0 LIC Eastern) totaled 275 yards, with Stepina running for 65 and passing for 110. Red Hill (1-6, 1-4 LIC Eastern) finished with 144 yards, half of which came on Clevy's touchdown run. Clevy finished with 81 yards on the ground to lead the Salukis.
"Casey's got a really good defense, and they played well. Offensively we never got going," Gray said. "We're just looking to find a way to make something happen. We don't have a whole lot of speed, so we can't do a whole lot outside the tackles."
The game was twice delayed by lightning, and did not kick off until 8:15 p.m.
"We came out twice, but had to go back to the locker room," Gray said. "That wears on the kids. They're getting ready to play and they're told, 'No, we're going to back off for another half hour.' That wears on you. The field's in terrible condition right now. It's just a muddy mess, everywhere."
The Salukis will face two LIC Egyptian Division teams to close out the season. Red Hill hosts Olney (6-1) Friday evening, before finishing the season at Lawrenceville (5-2).
"It doesn't get any easier," Gray said. "The roughest part of our schedule is at the end of the season. But the kids will give it their all and see what they can do."
