Tribe handles Lions in sloppy conditions
MARSHALL - Lawrenceville High School's football team might not be at its best when playing in the slop, but the Indians were more than good enough to beat Marshall for the first time in more than a decade on Friday.
On the muddy surface at Bush Field, the Indians gave up an early touchdown but rallied to dominate the Lions, 26-7.
"I think we've figured out that we're not mudders," said LHS coach Greg Wood, whose team overcame eight fumbles - none of which were lost - and 103 yards in penalties to tame the Lions for the first time in 12 tries. "We're kind of a fair weather football team. We want some sunshine out there, and a dry track. We've played twice in the rain (Friday, and earlier in the season at Flora) and haven't performed well. But we played well enough to win both times, and that's good."
The Indians, who are now 5-2 and finished third in the Little Illini Conference's Eastern Division with a 3-2 mark, can clinch just the fourth playoff berth in school history by winning at Palestine later this week.
The Indians finished with 472 yards in total offense, all on the ground. The total would have been even bigger, but long TD runs by Indians Cole Hulen and Zach Shoulders were called back due to penalties far behind the play.
The Lions struck first, moving 83 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead on quarterback Austin Osborn's five-yard run with 2:30 remaining in the opening period.
The Indians were in complete control from that point. Austin Wanke capped a 72-yard march with the first of his two TDs, a 16-yard jaunt with 10:57 to play in the second period. Wanke's 54-yard TD run with 5:12 to play in the second period gave the Tribe a 12-7 lead at halftime.
Lawrenceville converted a Marshall fumble into a touchdown to extend the lead with 4:27 to play in the third period. Evan Staggs capped the three-play, 11-yard drive by scoring from three yards out.
LHS scored the clinching touchdown with just 51 seconds to play on a one-yard dive by quarterback Shoulders.
"We must have had 600 yards offense," Wood said. "But an awful lot of that was called back."
Wanke led the way, carrying 15 times for 162 yards. Shoulders finished with 160 yards on the ground, Hulen 88 and Staggs 66.
Defensively, the Indians gave up 200 yards, of which 131 came on the ground. The Lions (1-6, 1-4 LIC Egyptian) gained just 43 yards in the second half.
"I think our defense has been playing really well," Wood said. "The problem is they've been giving up some big plays, and that's kind of where they get bad rap. They didn't give up those big plays tonight, and after that first drive we kept them out of the end zone."
Without the penalties, the Indians would likely have won the game by a comfortable margin. The Indians were flagged 12 times for 103 yards. Wood was penalized twice himself, once for being on the field of play as the action was going on, and once for unsportsmanlike conduct.
"I think they had a checklist they were going off of," Wood said of the referees. "I don't think there's a penalty in the book they didn't call. You're going to run into that once in a while, and it was nice that we were able to work through it."
The win was the first for LHS against Marshall since joining the LIC in the fall of 2001.
"It's nice to get back on the winning track," Wood said. "It's big, to beat a team like Marshall. I thought our kids played awfully hard. We got a lot of kids muddy, so that's a good thing."
