Robinson manhandles Indians, 20-0
LARENCEVILLE - Visiting Robinson's 20-0 blanking of Lawrenceville High School's football team Saturday afternoon had second-year Indians' coach Greg Wood in an apologetic mood.

"I think I'm the one who screwed up," Wood said after the game that was postponed to Saturday at Ed Loeb Field, due to Friday's storms. "I failed as a coach to get them game-ready for an opponent like Robinson. There's a whole lot of difference between the Edwards County and Oblong teams we beat, and the team we played today."

The Maroons shut down the Indians' high-octane offense, allowing just 179 yards in total offense, In the meantime, Robinson powered its way to touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. Robinson rushed for 222 yards and accumulated 61 more through the air.

"I'm not going to make any excuses about it. We got our butts kicked," Wood said. "We've got to work hard in practice to make sure we're at game speed. We need to be ready down the road, when we face teams like this,"

It's not as though the Indians (2-1, 0-1 LIC Egyptian) didn't have their chances.

Lawrenceville started the game at its own 26 and marched to the Robinson 20 eight plays. Faced with a third and five, the Indians tried their first pass and quarterback John Barnes' attempt to hit tight end Gage McIntosh was in to a strong wind and fell well short.

"We had things rolling, but got stymied," Wood said. "I made a terrible call on third down. We should have ran the darn ball again. We were in four-down territory and knew we were going to go for it. Then we were forced to throw the ball again on fourth down, and right now we're not very good at throwing the ball."

After the Indians were forced to punt on their second possession, the Maroons established control of the game. Robinson needed just three plays to move 55 yards to take the lead. The Maroons scored on a 30-yard pass from Austin Stevens to Landen Hoagland. The Maroons stretched the lead to 8-0 when Stevens passed to Blake Hale.

The lead grew to 14-0 early in the second period, when the Maroons moved 54 yards in nine plays after recovering a Lawrenceville fumble. The score came on a 1-yard run by Jason Richart.

Robinson scored its final touchdown on its first possession of the second half by marching 56 yards in four plays. Austin Weck's 20-yard run accounted for the score.

Lawrenceville moved inside the Robinson 30 later in the game, but another lost fumble stalled the drive.

Fumbling was a problem for the Indians, who put the ball on the turf five times. The Maroons recovered four of those fumbles.

"Every time we had a chance, we put the ball on the floor," Wood said. "Those (fumbles) are just killing us. I'm sure we lead the state of Illinois in fumbles right now."

The Maroons (2-1, 1-0 LIC Egyptian) had the ball for 31:10, compared to 15:50 for the Indians. While three different Robinson backs rushed for 47 yards or more, Stevens was good on all three passes he attempted for 61 yards.

The Indians hope to right the ship on Friday when they travel to Newton for another LIC Egyptian game. Robinson hosts winless Marshall in a conference game on Saturday.
