Indians run well to open X-C season
EDWARDSVILLE - Lawrenceville High School's cross country teams got their feet wet against top-notch competition Saturday, at the Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran Invitational, on the course at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Lawrenceville's girls team had a strong showing, placing 14th among 33 complete teams with 434 points. The LHS boys were in the middle of the pack, totaling 451 points to place 18th among 34 full teams.

"Coach (Bill) Bandy and myself were both really pleased," LHS co-coach John Christy said. "All of our kids ran hard and really competed."

Connor Holmes, a sophomore at Red Hill High School, paced Lawrenceville's effort as he placed 39th in a field of 242 runners in 19:11. Zach Kocher (59th in 19:41), Tristan Davis (84th in 20:28), Dylan Volkman (135th in 21:49) and Harry Loeb (167th in 22:38) also scored for LHS.

Sophomore Wyatt Whewell was close to the other Indians, placing 184th in 23:06, while sophomore Jag Rich went down during the race with a leg injury.

Rochester had five runners finish among the top 32 and scored 91 points to win the meet. Mt. Zion (133), Olney (165), Freeburg (177) and Mascoutah (184) completed the top five.

The individual champion was Mascoutah John Clayton, who won the five-kilometer race in 16:15.

Freshman Slayton Dorney led the LHS efforts in the ensuing open race. Logan Lopez, Evan Briner and Tyler Tewell also ran in the open run for the Indians.

"We've got some ideas now," Christy said. "We're going to keep working hard and that's a good thing."

Girls meet

The Indians accomplished the 14th-place finish with a roster of just six runners. Senior Meredith Spitz led the LHS charge by placing 46th in the field of 231 in 23:26. Not far behind was another senior, Katie Liberman, who ran 69th in 24:18. Hannah Burkhardt (76th in 24:33), Andie Scherer (115th in 26:00) and Heather Hill (149th in 27:37) also scored for LHS. Macie Paddick, who was 151st in 27:39, rounded out the LHS efforts.

Decatur St. Teresa had four runners among the first nine finishers - all seven in the top 20 - and handily won the meet with 45 points. Rochester (60), Breese Mater Dei (130), Freeburg (222) and Carterville (257) completed the top five.

Rochester freshman Meagan McNicholas won the race in 19:39.

"The course was tough, and it was a hot day. There are a lot of nice-sized hills. I'm pretty proud of our runners for the way they worked through everything," Christy said.

The Indians will run Tuesday at Effingham St. Anthony, along with Olney and Robinson.

"It's a flat course, so it should be a lot of fun for the kids," Christy said.

LHS will host Olney Thursday in its first home meet.
