Indians hope to learn from their mistakes
LAWRENCEVILLE - New Lawrenceville High School coach Trinity Britton doesn't mind seeing her team make mistakes in practice.
"I'm big on learning from mistakes," said Britton, a Mount Carmel resident who is coaching at the varsity level for the first time. "I push them to make mistakes, because I don't think you can get better if you don't make them. It's a tough challenge for them, but if they can get through that they'll be successful."
The Indians have a host of players returning from last year's team that finished 5-28 under coach Brooke Ray, who stepped down after the season. Britton is pleased that the team has height, and seems to possess some skill.
LHS opens the season Thursday, in a Little Illini Conference match at Hutsonville.
Hannah Johnson is one of eight seniors on the team, and has been tabbed as the left-side hitter. McKenzi Kelly, another senior, will play in the middle, with junior Kourtney Osmon slated to play outside.
Katy Trinkle, also a senior, will be the team's primary setter with sophomore twins Hannah and Heather Holmes ready to go in reserve.
Two more seniors, Liana Bales and Heidi Litherland are the top defensive specialists, while sophomore Sadie Newlin figures to get regular time in the rotation as does senior Rona Taylor.
"I'm not afraid to make changes on the fly," Britton said. "I'm not afraid to make changes in the middle (of a match), and just because somebody starts on Tuesday doesn't mean they'll be starting on Thursday."
Other seniors out for the team are Jenny Uhlik and Taylor Houck. Also listed on the roster are junior Kitrina Mack, sophomores Allisha Hartz, Madison Organ and Mattie White and freshmen Kazia Frederick, Abbi Higginbotham, Morgan Mefford and Sidney Sullens.
"Each girl has signed on to do her job, which is great," said Britton. "Now it's a matter of interweaving their strengths as a group."
Britton doesn't fully know what to expect once the season begins, but is certain the team will fight to the end.
"Their skills are coming along," she said. "And they have heart, for sure. The effort will be there. It's just a matter of seeing if they can mesh as a unit and do the team thing well."
