Reaping the benefits of exercise

Unit 10 participating in summer meal program
BRIDGEPORT - The Red Hill Unit 10 school district is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.

School officials, in a news release, said "meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service."

Meals will be provided, at a first-come, first-serve basis at Bridgeport Grade School from 11:30 a.m. - 12 noon Monday through Friday. The meals will begin June 1 and will end June 28.

Lawrenceville City pool opens season Monday
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrenceville City pool will open Memorial Day, with new pool manager Maddy Carrie at the helm.

Pool hours are Monday through Saturday from noon-6 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. Admittance to the pool is $1 for everyone. For more information, call the pool at 943-6066.

Unit 20 board to meet Monday
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Unit 20 school board will meet in special session at 1:45 p.m. Monday at Lawrenceville High School.

School officials said the agenda items are "consideration and approval of reading series for 2016-17 school year and approval of a letter of retirement."

Sixth annual chamber Celebrity Chef event June 25
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is looking for local chefs for the upcoming Celebrity Chef event to be held at Lasata Wines on June 25, from 6-8 p.m.

This event features "Celebrity" men and women from the area who prepare samplings of their own recipes for attendees. Serving sizes will be small 4oz samples. Chefs donate their expense, or have a business sponsor them, for the dish they prepare and time for serving at the event. Tickets will be sold in advance at the cost of $25 per person for indoor seating and $20 per person for outside seating.

2016 Cream of the Crop photo contest now open
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs is encouraging young photographers to submit photos for the 2016 Cream of the Crop photo contest.

The contest encourages young photographers to share their vision of agriculture in Illinois. "I grew up in rural Illinois. I know the beauty and strength that can be found on our farms and I look forward to seeing it through the eyes of our children," Frerichs said.

Veterans to be recognized on Remembrance Wall
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon), and the Illinois Senate Republican caucus are teaming up to honor and remember the sacrifice of the brave servicemen and servicewomen who have passed away.

The public is encouraged to submit a photograph and written remembrance of veterans who are no longer with us, which will be displayed on the Illinois State Capitol Memorial Day Remembrance Wall. The submissions will be displayed in the State Capitol Rotunda starting at the beginning of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 26 through July 4.

Click It or Ticket campaign begins in Illinois
EFFINGHAM - The Illinois State Police (ISP) in District 12 remind motorists to buckle up before heading onto Illinois roadways during the May 13-30, Click It or Ticket mobilization.

Troopers will be conducting seat belt patrols, encouraging all vehicle occupants to wear seat belts in order to reduce traffic crash fatalities. Fatal traffic crashes in District 12 have increased 80 percent this year; as compared to the same time period last year.
Illinois State police continue to seek man involved in Mahomet police shooting
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Police continue to seek a man accused in the shooting of a Mahomet police officer on Saturday.

In a news release, ISP said on May 7, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a Mahomet police officer was involved in a shooting with Dracy "Clint" Pendleton, 35. The officer and Pendleton exchanged gunfire and Pendleton fled the scene. The officer was shot in the arm and it is believed Pendleton received wounds (possibly a gunshot) during the confrontation, but it is unknown to what degree.

Students to be in the spotlight at first CEO trade show
LAWRENCEVILLE - The CEO program, or Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities, is hosting its first trade show at Lanterman Park, Thursday from 4:30-7 p.m.

CEO is a daily class that shows high school students what it's like to be an entrepreneur through real world experiences. With this program, everything is real. They are taught through real experiences, with real businesses, and develop real skills. Red Hill and Lawrenceville students are challenged with creating their own small business, writing the business plan, securing funding and running the business.

ISP to conduct special nighttime patrols
EFFINGHAM - The Illinois State Police (ISP) District 12, will conduct Nighttime Enforcement Patrols (NITE) in Jasper and Lawrence Counties during May, according to Commander Captain Kelly Hodge.

The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired drivers. Therefore, officers working NITE patrols will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license, transporting open alcoholic beverages, driving under the influence (DUI), and are not properly buckled up.

Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois according to state police statistics.
