Fourth of July on the 10th
Lawrence County residents received a belated Fourth of July treat Sunday evening. Lawrenceville’s fireworks display, rained out on July 3, lit up the sky with colored lights for 15 minutes. The event was held at Lawrenceville High School on James Street. At times multiple bursts of different colors delighted groups of onlookers along the streets and in their backyards. Last weekend fireworks displays were held in Bridgeport, St. Francisville and over the Wabash River between Westport and Vincennes.

Blood drive set for July 29
BRIDGEPORT - The Red Hill Students Against Destructive Decisions organization is kicking off the next Red Cross blood drive cycle with a summer blood drive on July 28.

The event is set for 2-7 p.m. at the New Hope Christian Church. 

Appointments can be scheduled via email at  Walk-ins are also welcome.

Red Cross officials said blood supplies are at critically low levels and donors are desperately needed.

IDPH offers tips to beat the heat
SPRINGFIELD - With high temperatures and higher humidity expected over the next several days, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. is urging Illinoisans to take preventive actions to avoid heat-related illness like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

"High heat and humidity can lead to serious health problems. It's important for people to recognize the signs of heat-related illness and take action to prevent becoming sick," said Director Shah. "To help your body cope with high temperatures, take steps to stay cool, increase your fluid intake, decrease your activities and wear appropriate clothing."

Historical society meeting to feature Lawrenceville native
LAWRENCEVILLE - The next meeting of the Lawrence County Historical Society is Monday at 7 p.m. at the History Center at the corner of 12th and State Streets in Lawrenceville and will feature Annelise "Anni" Morris who will present a program on the black pioneer families of Lawrence County.

Fair pig wrestling registration is underway
SUMNER - Lawrence County Farm Bureau's Young Leaders will host their annual Pig Wrestling event at 7 p.m. July 27 at the Lawrence County fairgrounds.

This Junior Fair event is open to competitors ages five and up. Teams of four or five can register for $35 dollars until July 26 at noon.

LCHD's final immunization clinic is set for July 23
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrence County Health Department's last scheduled "Back to School" immunization clinic is set for July 23.

LCHD officials said the clinic will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Officials noted that space is limited and appointments are necessary.

Call 618-943-3302, select option three to schedule a child's appointment.

Most children entering kindergarten, sixth, ninth and 12th grades require immunizations. Children entering pre-school and pre-k may require other services for school enrollment.

Water/Ways coming to Lawrence County
LAWRENCEVILLE - Bounded by several of the most important rivers on this continent and one of the Great Lakes, Illinois has been influenced profoundly by water throughout its history.

A new Museum on Main Street exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, Water/Ways, is coming to Lawrenceville and five other Illinois communities.

Water/Ways will invite Illinoisans to consider the monumental significance of water in the human experience when it visits six communities in 2016-17 under the auspices of Illinois Humanities.

Fireworks display, flag retirement rescheduled
LAWRENCEVILLE - The city of Lawrenceville fireworks show, which was rained out, has been rescheduled for Sunday at Lawrenceville High School, on James Street.

The fireworks display was originally scheduled for July 3. City officials stressed that the fireworks display is not at the old LHS. The show will begin at dusk.

A flag retirement ceremony, also rained out, has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at River Park in east Lawrenceville. This event is being hosted by Boy Scout Troop 245.

Red Cross issues emergency call for blood, platelets
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood and platelets, urging all eligible donors to give now to replenish an extremely low summer blood supply.

Blood donations have fallen short of hospital needs for the past few months, resulting in about 39,000 fewer donations than what's needed, as well as a significant draw down of the overall Red Cross blood supply. In addition, the Independence Day holiday may have caused many regular donors to postpone donations due to vacation plans.

A recent Red Cross poll revealed that more than 75 percent of donors surveyed indicated vacation plans this summer, many of them occurring the weeks before and after July 4.

Good Samaritan's Samaritan Center receives additional funding for quality care
VINCENNES - During Tuesday night's board meeting, Andrea Cole, Executive Director of Behavioral Health, explained that the Samaritan Center, a Community Mental Health Center of Good Samaritan, received additional recognition and funding for the quality of care and increased volume of patients that they have served.

The Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) has awarded Samaritan Center a contract expansion and grant extension; both of which are from the State of Indiana.

Rain dampens holiday weekend
LAWRENCEVILLE - Weekend rain dampened many holiday weekend plans and has rivers rising.

According to information provided by the National Weather Service, the Mid-American Air Center weather station, located just northeast of Lawrenceville, recorded 2.49 inches of rain Sunday and Monday.

Most of the rain - 1.91 inches - fell Sunday while another .58 inches were recorded on Monday.
