Robinson Correctional Center escapee apprehended
PALESTINE - Jared Carter, the man who fled from a trustee program late Friday morning at Robinson Correction Center, is back in prison.

He was arrested at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday by Palestine Police Chief Jeffrey Besing on LaMotte St. near Main.

The final arrest came from a call that said Carter was near Biernbaum Garage in Palestine. As Besing headed towards the garage dispatch received another call that Carter was walking on Market Street. When Besing approached the area he said he saw Carter, who walked up and said "You know who I am," and asked for water.

Carter was taken into custody without incident.

During transport Carter said his muscles were sore and asked for water. Besing said he told Carter they would get him water at the facility they were headed to, which turned out to be Crawford County Jail.

There he changed out of a torn T-shirt he found at some point and his prison issued pants and shoes, Jail Administrator Fred Chinn said. He was dressed in a gray IDOC jumpsuit when he was loaded into a prison transport van and removed from the jail.

Carter is now in Pontiac Correctional Center, a maximum-security facility.

The effort involved over 100 DOC officers, the U.S. Marshals, the Illinois State Police, Crawford County Sheriff's department and Robinson Police, supported by helicopters and an airplane.

Carter would have been eligible for parole in May 2016.
