ISP issue 401 DUIs, 8,860 speeding tickets in 2012
EFFINGHAM - Illinois State Police District 12 has released a summary of activity for the district, which is headquartered in Effingham and includes Lawrence County.

Other counties in District 12 are: Clark, Clay, Crawford, Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Marion and Richland.

Commander Morrie Fraser said that during 2012, District 12 handled 32,764 incidents, which included 5,290 requests for service from the public or other law enforcement agencies. The remaining 27,474 incidents were self-initiated by troopers.

The activity summary is broken down as follows:

• 401 drivers arrested for Driving Under the Influence;

• 650 citations issued for other alcohol violations;

• 1,050 criminal arrests;

• 3,739 commercial motor vehicles inspected;

• 523 commercial motor vehicles and/or drivers placed out-of-service for safety violations;

• 3,735 motorist assists ;

• 811 vehicles towed;

• 18,972 citations - 8,860 speeding, 3,438 seatbelt, 314 distracted driving;

• 12,711 written warnings.

Illinois State Police officials said District 12 troopers handled 940 crashes. District-wide, there were 35 fatal crashes claiming 38 lives. Alcohol was a factor in 11 of the fatal crashes.

Preliminary Illinois State Police statewide- statistics show 894 fatal traffic crashes with 964 fatalities during 2012. Through partnerships with the Illinois Department of Transportation and area local law enforcement agencies, fatalities remained under 1,000 for the third straight year.

Regionally, District 12's fatalities increased slightly from 35 in 2011 to 38 in 2012.

For 2013, state police officials said District 12 will continue to focus on traffic enforcement, safety education and traffic safety partnerships.
