Voter turnout at 58 percent
LAWRENCEVILLE -Voter turnout for the 2012 presidential election was lower than in 2008 or 2004, but the numbers were close.

Lawrence County Clerk Will Gibson reported that 57.9 percent of the registered voters made it to the polls, Tuesday, compared to 63.4 percent in 2008 and 60.1 percent in 2004.

"We had a 58 percent turnout. That's kind of right on course. That's not bad," Gibson said.

A total of 6,079 voters cast ballots Tuesday. There were 10,504 registered voters.

In 2008, 6,655 Lawrence County voters went to the polls and in 2004, 6,794 votes were cast.

Final results were released at about 9 p.m., just two hours after the polls closed.

"I feel like everything went real well," Gibson said. "I want to thank all of the election judges out there who gave of their time today, and my staff. They worked really hard to make this thing go. It just kind of feels like at this point, everything went really smoothly."
